Growing Up (Franz Ferdinand)
1863 - Franz Ferdinand Karl Ludwig Joseph Maria von Habsburg-Lothringen (Here After Franz Ferdinand) was born on the 18th of December 1863. His father was Karl Ludwig, brother of Emperor Franz Josef l of Austria-Hungary and was the Emperor of Mexico. Franz mother was María Annunciata and was Karl Ludwig's second wife.
1865 - This year marked the birth of Franz's brother Otto Ferdinand. These two lived together but Otto was never heir to the throne.
1870 - Franz's first sister Marguerite Ferdinand was born in 1870. Unfortunately she died in 1871 from Smallpox. This is a
contagious disease unique to humans. Smallpox is a very serious illness caused by a virus called the variola virus. Smallpox gets its name from the pus-filled blisters (or pocks) that form during the illness.
1871 - Franz Ferdinand's mother María Annunciata died at the young age of 28 in the year of 1871. She died from tuberculosis.This is a bacterial disease involving the lungs where the bacteria breaks down the walls of the lungs and completely destroys them within three months.
1877 - Franz Ferdinand entered the army from a young age. He was frequently and rapidly promoted, given the rank of lieutenant at age fourteen.
1889 - In 1889, Franz Ferdinand's life changed dramatically. His cousin Crown Prince Rudolf committed suicide at his family hunting lodge. The death of Crown Prince Rudolf left Franz Ferdinand's father, Archduke Karl Ludwig, as first in line to the throne.
1889 - In 1889 Franz Ferdinand became a captain of the army at the age of 22.
1894 - Franz became a colonel of the army at the age of 27. This is the second highest rank in the army and Franz Ferdinand became the youngest member to become a colonel
1898 - Franz became a Major General of the army in 1898 at the age of just 31.
